Leverstock Green went down to a second half strike in Tuesday night's Premier Division match at Pancake Lane. There was little to choose between them and visitors Dunstable Town, but in a game that always looked like being settled by one goal, it was Dunstable who got that goal.
The windy conditions didn't make for the best of games, and there were few chances in the first half. The first effort on goal didn't come until the 12th minute, a shot well over the bar from Dunstable's Nick Jackson, a player who had a stellar few months at Leverstock during season 2005/6. On 21 minutes Jackson pulled the ball back from the bye-line for Dan O'Connor, whose shot took a big deflection, but Carl Tasker claimed it.
Leverstock had their first shot on 28 minutes, a dipping volley from Dale Sears that went just wide. A minute later Mark Welling won the ball with a great tackle and fed Lewis Pritchard, whose cross found Bekim Culaj with a good chance, but he headed over the bar from six yards out.
The second half followed in a similar vein. Green went close again on 62 minutes when Welling hit a great shot from distance which keeper Paul Taylor turned round the post. From the resulting corner, Lee Bircham's cross found Sears, whose header came back off the bar. The rebound dropped for Matt Wardle, but his shot was cleared off the line by a defender. Two minutes later Dunstable should have scored when Green struggled to clear a corner, but Luke Flood shot over the bar from a good chance.
Adam Reid replaced Culaj on 66 minutes, and within a minute his run and cross found Pritchard, who hooked a shot just wide. There was almost a disaster for Tasker on 69 minutes when he kicked the ball straight to O'Connor inside his own box, but the Dunstable striker didn't punish the mistake as he shot across goal and wide. Russell Preston also missed a good chance for Dunstable as he headed over the bar from Douglas Kisuule's cross on 73 minutes.
The winning goal came in the 77th minute. It was set up by a great cross by Jackson to the far post. Bircham tried to head it away, but his header only went up in the air and dropped kindly for O'Connor, who lashed home a volley from close range. Despite bringing on Simon Conway and Sean Biswell, and pushing Sears up front for the last few minutes, Leverstock couldn't create any more clear-cut chances, and Dunstable held on comfortably for the win.
