Leverstock Green had to settle for a point from last night's visit to Hatfield Town despite having led 2-0 at one stage. Hatfield twice fought back to level and the game could have gone either way in the end.
With many first-choice players injured or unavailable, including both centre-backs, Steve Heath took the chance to start with several young players from the reserve and youth sides, namely Joe Cooper, Jordan Fredericks, Sean Biswell and Jamie Sharples. The team could hardly have made a better start, as they put Hatfield under pressure from the kick-off. Eventually Simon Conway got in a cross from the left touchline, and Sharples came in to slot the ball past keeper Sam Lacey, putting Green 1-0 ahead with just under a minute on the clock.
The lead could have been doubled on 10 minutes when Adam Reid's cross found Daniel Griggs at the far post, but his volley was turned round the post by Lacey. On 22 minutes a free kick from Reid found Matt Wardle coming in at the far post, but he headed wide. Eventually Leverstock doubled their lead in style on 36 minutes. Sharples chased a ball from the back, but Lacey came out of his goal to clear the ball. However, Lacey's clearance only went as far as Griggs, on the edge of the centre circle, and spotting that Lacey was well out of his goal, Griggs controlled the ball and launched a perfect lob from 50 yards out over the stranded keeper which dropped just under the bar for a 2-0 lead.
Two minutes later a clever free kick from Lee Bircham found Wardle inside the box with space to turn, but he shot just over the bar. Green looked well in control, but Hatfield got back in the game with a contentious goal in the last minute of the half. The entire Green contingent strongly felt that Cooper was fouled during the build-up, but the referee gave nothing, and the ball was crossed from the left to find Matt Standen unmarked in front of goal with a simple tap-in to pull the score back to 2-1 at the break.
The goal was scored at the perfect time to boost Hatfield's morale, and they came out looking a different side for the second half. Hatfield had levelled the scores at 2-2 within 30 seconds of the restart as Jason Beck took advantage of some hesitant defending to shoot past Carl Tasker.
However, Green regained the lead just before the hour mark. Wardle was played in down the right channel, and while a pass to put Sharples through looked an option, instead Wardle cut inside and fired home a low shot past Lacey from the edge of the area for a 3-2 lead.
That lead only lasted for 2 minutes, though, as a slip from Cooper allowed Lewis Field to burst through the middle and smash a shot past Tasker to level at 3-3.
For the remainder of the game Hatfield had most of the pressure, and Tasker had to pull off two good saves, turning the ball away after a long throw into the box on 63 minutes, and turning a shot from Standen round the post on 84 minutes. It was Green that nearly won it, though, with the last kick of the game in the fourth minute of stoppage time. Dale Sears won the ball in midfield and played it out to Griggs, who delivered a superb cross. Wardle was coming in and got his head to it, but couldn't quite divert his header on target. The final whistle was blown as the resulting goal kick was taken, and in the end a draw looked like a fair result.
