Leverstock Green fell to their third 1-0 defeat in the last four games on a wet and miserable afternoon at Colney Heath. The goals seem to have dried up for the Green at the moment, who drop to 9th in the Premier Division table after this defeat.
Steve Heath had Bill Morgan back in the side having completed his suspension, but otherwise this was the same line-up that started the Hatfield game on Wednesday. There was little in the way of goalmouth action early in the game, with a couple of shots from Sean Biswell, one going wide and one being comfortably saved, being Leverstock's only efforts on goal in the first half. The first chance of the game fell to the home side on 26 minutes, as a ball from the back flicked off a Green defender to put Ian Cooper through on goal, but Dale Sears stayed with him and Cooper's eventual shot beat Carl Tasker but struck the post. Five minutes before the break a Colney Heath free kick was flicked on by Phil Jackman towards the far post, but Morgan got back to clear it off the line just as another forward was coming in to finish off.
Biswell had been struggling with his choice of footwear in the first half, and was replaced at half time by Bekim Culaj. The incident that turned the game against Green came five minutes into the second half. The Leverstock defence went to sleep as the home side took a quick throw-in, and Cooper went in with a hard challenge on Tasker as the Green keeper came out to claim the ball. No foul was given, and a goal was only averted by Lee Bircham getting back to clear off the line. However, Tasker required five minutes of treatment and was still not fully mobile.
Green had their best effort of the match on 55 minutes as Matt Wardle had a run at goal before laying back for Daniel Griggs, whose shot was turned round the post by the keeper. Three minutes later Tasker had to accept the inevitable and come off, and with no keeper on the bench, veteran striker Allan Arthur donned the keeper's jersey.
Lewis Pritchard replaced Jamie Sharples in a third change shortly before Colney Heath took the lead on 64 minutes with a route one goal. A goal kick was flicked on by Jackman, and Neil Thompson got the better of Bircham before shooting past Arthur.
The remainder of the game saw little goalmouth action, but Arthur did well on the few occasions he was called into action. Leverstock didn't get another effort at goal until the second minute of stoppage time when the ball dropped for Pritchard in the box after a long throw, but he couldn't get his shot on target. In the fifth minute of stoppages Arthur pulled off a good save to deny Kevin Ashwood, while at the other end Sears had a shot saved in Green's last push of the match.
Things don't get any easier for Leverstock, with in-form Royston Town visiting Pancake Lane this coming Tuesday night.
