Leverstock Green finally made their entry into the competition in which they did so well last season, and they now face an FA Vase Second Round replay on Tuesday night after fighting out a goalless draw with Enfield 1893 at Pancake Lane on Saturday. Despite the lack of goals it was an exciting, competitive game with plenty of chances for both sides. The Green performance in particular was a great improvement on recent games, and unrecognisable from the insipid display at Hatfield last week.

Max Farrelly was back in the Green side after an injury lay-off, and with Ben Butler returning from suspension and Kevin Gallen available to play, it was a strong-looking line-up. The visitors had the best of the early play, though. In the 3rd minute Ashley Taylor-Forbes crossed to Elliot Crosbie six yards out, but his header was straight at Carl Tasker, who also comfortably saved a shot from Crosbie three minutes later.

The first Green effort came in the 11th minute. Gallen played a free kick square to Butler, who struck a shot from distance through a crowd of players, but keeper James May was behind it all the way. A minute later another Gallen free kick was headed by Dan Griggs to Steve Hatch, who connected with a good shot, but May saved again. Soon after Farrelly had a run at goal and tried to slip the ball into the path of Gallen, but it went behind him.

Enfield forward Lee Benmore was posing a threat on the left side of the penalty area, curling a shot just over the angle on 20 minutes and having a shot saved by Tasker six minutes later. Crosbie should have done better from two shooting chances, firing over the bar both times.

Three minutes before the break Leverstock had their nearest miss when Gallen worked a space on the left side of the box and hit the ball across the face of goal. Butler slid in but just failed to make the contact that would have put the ball away. In stoppage time Enfield had their best effort, a fierce shot from Taylor-Forbes which brought a superb save out of Tasker, who tipped it onto the bar. The rebound would have dropped for Crosbie, but Craig Preston slid in with a crucial challenge to clear it for a corner.

The second half saw fewer chances but most of them fell to Leverstock. Gallen headed wide from a Farrelly cross on 58 minutes, and substitute Lee Stobbs shot wide after a good run on 68 minutes. A minute later Stobbs went on a run down the touchline and sent over a cross to the far post. Gallen managed to get an effort on target from a narrow angle but it was cleared off the line. Ten minutes from time Farrelly got a header to a Stobbs corner but that too was cleared off the line.

After ninety goalless minutes, the game went into a tense period of extra time. Apart from a first-minute chance which saw Farrelly's header from Lee Bircham's cross saved by May, there was little goalmouth action in the first period.

The second period saw Enfield looking the more likely to win it. After the ball was given away in midfield Geoffrey Ocran had what looked like a clear run at goal but Butler got back to put in a saving tackle. A minute from time Bradley Drisdale was clean through but Tasker came out to save with his legs. Tasker saved a curling free kick from Ben Shannon in the last minute to ensure the game would finish goalless.

The two sides will meet again for the replay at Goldsdown Road on Tuesday night, kick-off 7.45 pm.
