Holmer Green (0) 0
at Pancake Lane

An excellent second half display of attacking football saw Leverstock Green register a 3-0 win over Holmer Green in Saturday's league match at Pancake Lane. Since winning their opening ten league games Leverstock's form has been patchy, a huge injury crisis not helping, but Steve Heath seems to have steadied the ship again as his side have now won three in a row and have only been beaten by a penalty shoot-out in their last seven games.

The game had been in doubt the previous day with a large amount of water on the pitch, but it drained remarkably quickly on the Saturday morning, allowing the game to go ahead. The first half offered little for the spectators to get excited about on a chilly afternoon. The visitors had their best chance of the match in the 15th minute. A cross from Adam Davis was not properly cleared, and the ball fell for Joe Da Silva on the edge of the box, but he shot wide. On 27 minutes Adam Hallissey ran at the Holmer defence before threading the ball to Lewis Pritchard, but his shot was comfortably saved by keeper Nick Hancox. A great cross from Dan Griggs on 37 minutes went just over the head of Louis West at the far post.

A tactical switch at half time saw West moved from up front back to central defence, but West had to leave the game injured on 54 minutes to be replaced by Sean Biswell, stepping up from the reserves for the first time this season.

At the time of the substitution Leverstock had a free kick in a dangerous position 25 yards out, awarded for a trip on Bekim Culaj. Max Farrelly stepped up to take the free kick, having almost scored twice from similar positions last week at Boreham Wood. This time Farrelly was spot on, curling his shot over the wall and out of reach of Hancox to put Leverstock into a 1-0 lead in impressive fashion.

The goal seemed to visibly deflate the Holmer side, and Leverstock took control of the game. The introduction of Ioan Vranceanu in place of Pritchard on 67 minutes moved the performance up a gear as the lanky Romanian displayed his skill, touch and passing ability. The second goal arrived three minutes later. Hallissey's pass from the left touchline found Paul Insley just outside the box. Insley's attempted pass to Vranceanu was blocked by a defender, but Insley followed up his pass, retrieved the ball, and ran through to finish it himself, coolly slotting the ball past Hancox.

There should have been a third goal three minutes later as Leverstock broke quickly from a Holmer attack. Vranceanu found Griggs, who in turn played a defence-splitting pass to put Hallissey clean through, only for Hancox to deny him with a save.

On 76 minutes Insley was threatening again until he was brought down just outside the box by Bobby Cumber, who as the last man might have expected to see more than the yellow card he was shown by the referee. Farrelly took the free kick again but shot just wide this time.

Steven Eyango-Bwanga replaced Farrelly on 83 minutes, and the Frenchman was also keen to display his arsenal of skills. In the 89th minute Eyango-Bwanga's pass put Hallissey clean through again, but again he was denied by Hancox, who saved with his legs.

In stoppage time Eyango-Bwanga showed some dazzling footwork as he dribbled out from the corner flag past two defenders and crossed, but Vranceanu was denied from point-blank range by a great save from Hiscox. Leverstock deserved another goal, and they got it a few seconds later as Griggs fired home a cracker from the edge of the box into the top corner.

Leverstock now have a ten-day break before their next match, a visit to Aylesbury United on Tuesday 27th December.
