Leverstock Green rediscovered their scoring touch after three blank Saturdays in a row, but it still wasn't enough as they lost by the odd goal in seven to Haringey Borough in Saturday's league match at Pancake Lane.

Steve Heath had Craig Preston back from a long injury lay-off today, but was missing Paul Insley with a broken nose and Ioan Vranceanu, who was injured in last Saturday's game.

After a quiet start to the game the goals started flying in with the first coming on 16 minutes. Bekim Culaj made a great run down the left touchline, taking on and beating Charles Douse before squaring into the box where Ben Butler shot home from a narrow angle to put Leverstock into a 1-0 lead.

It should have been 2-0 five minutes later when a ball over the top allowed Lewis Pritchard to get in behind Nick Nicou, but instead of having a shot himself, Pritchard tried to square the ball and it was cleared by a defender. Instead it was 1-1 in the 30th minute. Dean Fenton pulled the ball back from the bye-line to Christopher Benjamin, whose shot was saved by the feet of Gareth Tinsley, but the ball spun up in the air and when it came down Roland Namquista was there first to poke it home from a matter of inches for the equaliser.

Four minutes later Haringey took the lead in impressive style with a sweeping move from one end of the field to the other. Ben Butler - one of two players on the pitch with that name - crossed from the right touchline and Namquista met it with a volley on the swivel from six yards out.

The visitors could have extended their lead on 38 minutes as Nicou got on the end of a near-post corner with a header that went across goal and just wide of the far post. Within a minute the scores were level as Leverstock won a free kick near the corner flag. Preston got the better of keeper Ryohei Tamai at the far post to head the ball down and Seldyn Grant was there to slot home his first goal for the club.

That still wasn't the end of the scoring in the first half. Two minutes before the break Demetri Stratis put over a cross which was cleared, but only straight back to him. Stratis crossed again, and Christopher Benjamin ran onto it and lifted the ball over Tinsley to send Haringey into half time with a 3-2 lead.

Louis West was pushed up front with Pritchard for the second half, and Leverstock had more of the possession and chances to equalise early in the half. In the opening minute Pritchard had a shot saved by Tamai. On 53 minutes Culaj made another good run down the left before crossing to set up a chance for Butler, but he shot wide from just inside the box.

The Green were unable to turn their pressure into goals, and paid the price when Haringey extended their lead on 77 minutes from a free kick just outside the box. Dean Fenton curled the ball over the wall and out of the despairing reach of Tinsley to put his side 4-2 up.

However, their two-goal cushion lasted less than a minute. Pritchard threaded the ball through to West, and he blasted the ball past Tamai to pull the score back to 4-3.

Leverstock made three substitutions over the last ten minutes, but couldn't carve out any more chances to prevent a fourth straight league defeat. Their season is still very much alive, though, with four cups still to play for, and this coming Tuesday night they host St Albans City in the semi-finals of the Herts Charity Cup.
