at Second Meadow

Leverstock Green gained a welcome three points, ending a run of four straight league defeats with a hard-fought 2-1 win at Biggleswade United on Saturday.

Steve Heath added another player to his squad on Saturday morning with the signing of Mark Burfoot from Tring Athletic, the striker returning to the club he last played for in the early part of the last decade. Burfoot's last couple of seasons have been blighted by injury but he will be a big asset to the side for the rest of the season.

The match kicked off in wet and windy conditions, with the wind blowing straight down the pitch against the Leverstock side. The first near miss came in the 13th minute with Adam Hallissey hitting a shot from the edge of the box just wide. Hallissey wasn't far away again on 22 minutes as he just failed to get up high enough to reach Junior Owusu-Akonor's cross.

Owusu-Akonor was showing impressive form, and on 28 minutes he used his pace and power to burst through a group of defenders, but with only keeper Scott Waters to beat he pulled his shot across goal, and Hallissey could only put the ball into the side netting. At the other end the home side were seeing plenty of the ball, largely due to the Green defence's problems with clearing the ball against the wind, but Carl Tasker was not forced into a serious save.

It was Leverstock who opened the scoring with a neat goal in the 37th minute. Owusu-Akonor threaded a pass to put Bekim Culaj clean through, and Culaj lifted the ball over the oncoming Waters to find the net.

The crucial second goal came in first half stoppage time, as Culaj found himself in an almost identical position against Waters. This time his shot went across goal and just eluded Hallissey, but Dan Griggs followed in behind to put the ball away for a 2-0 half time lead.

By the time the second half kicked off, the wind had dropped and the sun was shining. Leverstock picked up where they had left off in the first half, looking the better side, but despite threatening runs from Owusu-Akonor and Hallissey, they couldn't find a third goal.

Biggleswade pulled a goal back against the run of play ten minutes into the half. A cross from the right bounced across the penalty area to Chris Butler, who had been left unmarked, and Butler drilled home a low shot from a narrow angle for 2-1.

That goal changed the complexion of the game, as the home side were now on top against a Green side that was increasingly penned back in its own half. Despite all their pressure, though, Biggleswade couldn't create a clear-cut chance. Burfoot came off the bench with 15 minutes remaining and looked lively.

Towards the end of the game Green were increasingly holding on, but they did successfully hold out for a win that will be a great confidence-booster going into Tuesday night's Challenge Trophy semi-final at Haringey Borough.
