Leverstock Green failed to extend their winning run to a third game as Colney Heath came from behind to take three points away from Pancake Lane, leapfrogging them back above the Green into seventh place in the Premier Division table.
Steve Heath was forced into a late change to his side with Max Farrelly having to drop out during the warm-up, being replaced by Adam Hallissey.
The first half was a generally scrappy affair with neither side creating much in the way of chances. The first serious effort from either side was a shot over the bar by Colney's Aaron Clarke in the 18th minute. Leverstock's first moment of promise came in the 30th minute when Seldyn Grant won the ball by the touchline and threaded it to Lewis Pritchard, who in turned played it on to set up Austin, but Austin's shot was blocked. Four minutes before the break Austin got to the bye-line and pulled the ball back for Ben Butler, who had a good chance but failed to make proper contact with the ball.
The second half began with Kevin Gallen on in place of Pritchard, and five minutes into the half the Green took the lead with a well-worked goal. Hallissey fed Mark Shadbolt on the overlap, and Shadbolt's run took him to the bye-line where his cross was met by Austin sliding in to score his first goal since his return from injury.
The lead lasted less than two minutes, however. Carl Tasker flapped at a corner, and the ball dropped for Steve Barker, who had no hesitation in blasting the ball home from six yards out for the Colney equaliser.
On 59 minutes there was a nervous moment for Colney keeper Tom Blackman as he couldn't hold on to a free kick from Lee Bircham. Austin got his head to the loose ball but it went straight back into Blackman's hands. Two minutes later Leverstock found themselves behind to another set-piece goal. A free kick from the left touchline found an unmarked Jack Coombs at the far post to head Colney into a 2-1 lead.
The Green were up against it now, with Colney generally looking the stronger of the two sides and seemingly wanting it a bit more. There was a half chance on 65 minutes when Gallen played Austin through on goal, but Austin pulled his shot wide. There were few other chances as the Colney defence was in no mood to give anything up.
There was some concern at the end of the game for Austin, who received knocks to the head in two collisions during stoppage time, firstly colliding with Blackman after a late whistle for an offside flag, and secondly colliding with a defender in the box, after which he was on the ground for several minutes. An ambulance was called as Austin was suspected to be suffering with concussion, but he appeared to be OK in the end.
Next up for the Green is a visit to St Margaretsbury on Tuesday night.
