Leverstock Green's desperate run of results continued as they went down to two second half goals in Saturday's visit to London Tigers for their 11th straight league defeat and their 13th in all competitions.
Four new signings had been added to the squad since Tuesday, and three of them featured in today's starting line-up. Goalkeeper David Durbridge replaced Dan Blacktopp, who was suffering from concussion after his collision in Tuesday night's game, and Tom Hardy and Alex McCarthy also came into the side. Top scorer Stewart King was still not fit to start.
Leverstock could have taken the lead in the opening minute when Connor Deadman had a chance inside the box, but home keeper Ben Sherlock saved his shot. In the 13th minute Glenn Thompson and McCarthy combined to put Junior Bushiri through on goal. Bushiri lifted his shot over Sherlock, but it went wide. Three minutes later Deadman pressured a defender into a mistake, and took the ball on before shooting, but Sherlock turned it round the post.
At the other end Tigers went close in the 23rd minute when a fierce shot from Balasz Sinko struck the bar, and five minutes later a slick passing move put Pedro Cotelo clean through, but he too shot wide. In the final minute of the half Tunde Owolabi won the ball in his own penalty area and played it upfield to set McCarthy on the run down the right. McCarthy's cross found Deadman, but he pulled his shot wide.
The Green's first half performance promised much, but once again they faded in the second half. There was a chance in the 52nd minute when Deadman ran down the right and crossed to find McCarthy at the far post, but his volley went over the bar. However, two minutes later the Green defence was split open by a pass down the middle from Sinko which put Omar El-Bakkali clean through, and the forward made no mistake as he took the ball past Durbridge and ran it into the empty net to open the scoring.
Leverstock needed a quick response, but it was not forthcoming as the side seemed to run out of ideas and out of steam, and did not produce a save out of Sherlock for the remainder of the game. El-Bakkali sealed the points for his side with a well-taken second goal in the 83rd minute to leave the Green still sitting at the bottom of the league.
Leverstock now take a break from league games for two cup games, the first of which sees them make an immediate return to Avenue Park on Tuesday night in the Premier Division Cup. Next Saturday they are at home to St Margaretsbury in the Challenge Trophy.
