Leverstock Green’s FA Vase adventure is over for this year after they went down to a 2-1 home defeat to fellow SSML side Welwyn Garden City in Saturday’s second round tie at Pancake Lane.

A big blow for Leverstock was the absence through suspension of Curtis Donaldson, after the Green’s talisman forward had received his fifth booking of the season two weeks ago. Even so, it was a well-contested cup tie in wet conditions throughout, with the visitors just having the edge that took them into the last 64 of the competition.

Leverstock’s first chance of the game came in the 15th minute when Karl Davidson’s pass gave Lewis Bowers the chance to put a ball across goal that just eluded the incoming Jonathan Lacey. Four minutes later Welwyn broke away with Josh Bronti having a run at goal, but Liam Jahn turned his shot into the side netting. Bronti had another chance in the 23rd minute when Jack Read’s pass put him through, but he blazed his shot over the bar.

Ross Adams had a great chance to put Leverstock in front in the 28th minute when Davidson’s cross dropped for him in the six-yard box, but his shot hit the post. At the other end four minutes later Jahn pulled off a superb flying one-handed save to keep out a well-struck free kick from Bronti. However, in the 37th minute Bronti finally found the net when a pass from Ash Kersey allowed him to get the wrong side of Billy Fraser and drill a shot into the bottom corner of the net.

Leverstock had the slope in their favour in the second half, and there was a moment of controversy five minutes in when Lacey ran onto a flick from Bowers and would have been clean through but for a pull back from Martin Standen. The Welwyn defender was only shown a yellow card for the foul, and the free kick in a good position was wasted. Two minutes later Lacey beat a defender along the bye-line and squared the ball for Adams, but his effort was blocked.

A second goal for Welwyn in the 56th minute made it more of an uphill struggle for Leverstock. It was a classic route one goal as a goal kick straight down the middle was flicked on by Kersey on the edge of the box, and Jack Read raced in ahead of Jahn to lash the ball home from close range.

Jahn pulled off another save in the 68th minute to turn a shot from Bronti round the post, and from the resulting corner Zak Howells headed off the line. This could have been a turning point as Leverstock pulled a goal back four minutes later. Shane Wood nodded the ball through to Karl Thomas, who lobbed the keeper to put his side back in the game.

However, despite a huge effort from the Green side over the closing minutes, they weren’t able to create any more chances as the visitors sat deep and defended well, while still offering a threat on the break.

It was a disappointing exit for Scott Dash’s side, but they still have further cup ties to play this season, beginning with this coming Tuesday night’s visit to Winslow United in the third round of the Challenge Trophy.

(H) Hadley

Leverstock Green’s great run of form continued as they produced an astonishing result against a side that had reached the third round qualifying of the FA Cup on a giant-killing run earlier in the season. It was a superb performance by Scott Dash’s side as they smashed eight goals past Hadley to extend their winning run to five games in all competitions.

The opening minutes of the game were fairly even, but it was Leverstock that opened the scoring in the 12th minute after a great move that flowed from one side of the pitch to the other via Casey Linsell, Curtis Donaldson and Jonathan Lacey. Lacey’s pass released Karl Davidson, whose cross to the far post went over three defenders to find Lewis Bowers, who volleyed home emphatically from the angle of the six-yard box.

The same two players combined for the second Leverstock goal on 33 minutes as Davidson’s pass put Bowers through on goal to confidently strike a shot past Hadley keeper Charlie Mann into the corner of the net.

Hadley came out attacking at the start of the second half, but within two minutes of the restart they had been hit by another Leverstock goal. Donaldson floated a superb pass from his own half to find Lacey in the penalty area, and Lacey juggled the ball over a defender before shooting home an impressive third goal. That goal proved to be the opening of the floodgates. On 54 minutes Davidson robbed Hadley defender Harry Sedgley just outside his own penalty area and crossed for Lacey to slot home his second and Leverstock’s fourth goal of the afternoon.

There was a brief glimmer of hope for the visitors in the 55th minute as Ben Darby conceded a free kick just outside his own box, and Tyrone Mulholland’s low free kick went under the Leverstock wall and into the corner of the net to reduce the arrears to 4-1.

However, within a minute it was 5-1 as Karl Thomas hit a shot from 20 yards which Mann got both hands to but couldn’t keep out. Two minutes later a cross from Bowers found Donaldson on the edge of the six-yard box to head home a simple sixth goal for the Green.

There was still more to come as Davidson added to his three assists with two goals of his own. On 68 minutes a cross from Linsell was headed away, but only to the edge of the penalty area where Davidson met it with a rasping shot into the net. Three minutes from time a pass from Donaldson put Davidson through to shoot home his second and Leverstock’s eighth goal against a dispirited Hadley side.

It was a memorable afternoon for the Leverstock followers, and it is clear to see the confidence currently flowing through the side as the goals have started to fly in – the five straight wins in all competitions have produced 24 goals with only 6 conceded. Next Saturday sees a visit to Hoddesdon Town for a league match.

Leverstock Green continued their good form as they progressed into the last 16 of the SSML Challenge Trophy with a 2-1 win over Division One side Bedford in Tuesday night’s second round tie at Pancake Lane.

The Green side had a good chance with just over a minute played as they were awarded a free kick in a dangerous position for a defender’s high boot on Curtis Donaldson, however Donaldson blasted the kick wide. However, in the 5th minute a patient build-up involving Karl Davidson and Lewis Bowers ended with Zak Howells curling a cross to the far post where Donaldson sidefooted home his 12th goal of the season to put Leverstock into an early lead.

Despite the good start, the Leverstock side’s play became increasingly scrappy during the half. In the 14th minute Davidson hit a shot which was well saved by Bedford keeper Michael Hudson, however a minute later Howells was caught in possession in the Bedford half and the visitors broke quickly. Aaron Jarvis outpaced Kane Axten to go clean through and shoot past Liam Jahn for the equaliser.

A shot from Donaldson brought out another save from Hudson in the 26th minute, and on 34 minutes Davidson turned on the edge of the six-yard box and shot just wide, but at this stage it was an even contest and Bedford were well worth a 1-1 scoreline at half time.

The second half saw the Leverstock side up their work rate and they began to create more chances. On 48 minutes Donaldson played a ball through to Davidson, who burst into the box but blazed his shot over the bar. Four minutes later Donaldson went on a run into the box before laying the ball back for Ross Adams, whose shot hit the post. On the hour mark Donaldson curled over a free kick which George Biggadike got on the end of, but headed the ball into the ground. On 64 minutes Donaldson played a one-two with Karl Thomas before hitting a shot which Hudson turned into the side netting.

Finally in the 66th minute Leverstock went back in front. Donaldson delivered a corner into the six-yard box where a defender almost put the ball into his own net. It was cleared off the line, but Davidson pounced and blasted home the loose ball for a 2-1 Leverstock lead.

There was less threat from the Bedford side in the second half than there had been in the first, but Jahn still had to produce a save on 74 minutes when Ryan Archer broke away and got the better of two Green defenders before hitting a shot. Two minutes later Donaldson had a free kick saved by Hudson, and the Bedford keeper denied him again on 81 minutes, keeping out a shot after it had been Hudson himself who had kicked the ball straight to Donaldson’s feet.

The win was harder work than it should have been, but it was still a fourth straight win in all competitions for Scott Dash’s side, who will now travel to another Division One side Winslow United in the third round of the Challenge Trophy.

On Saturday Leverstock return to league action with a home game against Hadley.

(H) Sun Sports

Leverstock Green played their first game under interim manager Scott Dash following the midweek departure of Paul Hunt, but they failed to stop their losing run as they went down 3-1 at home to a Sun Sports side managed by former Leverstock manager Tim O’Sullivan and containing several former Green players. It was an evenly-contested game throughout, but two second-half goals from former Leverstock striker Chris Blunden turned the game in Sun’s favour.

The first half saw plenty of effort from both sides, but not a lot of chances created. In the 15th minute Curtis Donaldson hit a shot just wide of the post after his first effort had been blocked, and Dominic David came closest to scoring for Sun in the 41st minute with a shot from the edge of the box that was turned wide by Liam Jahn.

Sun keeper Matt Evans had to produce his first important save in the 57th minute when Karl Davidson got on the end of a Jonathan Lacey corner with a good shot. Another corner produced a near-miss as Kendall Allen came in at the near post but couldn’t get his header on target.

The deadlock was broken on the hour, as a cross from the left found Blunden in the box, and he took on a couple of defenders before finding the space to hit a shot that went in off the post. The second goal came on 72 minutes as a corner was not cleared, and Blunden turned on the edge of the six-yard box before shooting low into the corner of the net.

There was hope of a Leverstock comeback when they pulled a goal back with seven minutes remaining. Donaldson’s pass put Brima Johnson through to slot the ball past Evans and reduce the deficit to 2-1.

However, the outcome was sealed a minute from time when Leverstock were caught on the break from their own corner. Another old boy Tommy Walsh brought the ball out of defence and played it forward to Blunden, who took on a defender before squaring to find David in acres of space to shoot home the third Sun goal.

A few key players were missing from today’s line-up, but it is hoped that Scott Dash will have the full squad to select from for next Saturday’s home match against one of the expected title contenders, Welwyn Garden City.
