Match Report

Leverstock Green finished the season with a 3-0 home defeat to already-crowned champions Leighton Town, but held onto their 7th place in the league thanks to Biggleswade United also losing. It was a game that never caught fire and for the most part looked like an end-of-season affair, and all three goals were rather softly conceded.

Leverstock had the better of a quiet open half-hour, winning several corners, but apart from a near scramble caused by a corner in the 15th minute, little came of them. In the 26th minute Elginey Daalberg made a good run and put over a cross which George Mitchell-Gears tried to hook over his head, but the effort went wide. In the 30th minute Mitchell-Gears won the ball off Ben Spaul and was set to run through until being brought down by Spaul, who only received a yellow card when a red could have been a possibility.

Two minutes before the half looked like drifting towards a goalless conclusion, Leighton scored when Lewis Toomey got on the end of a Kyle Connolly free kick with a header that should have been stopped, but found its way into the net.

The second half was equally uninspiring, and Leighton added a second goal in the 65th minute. The Green defence was undone by a single ball down the middle as a flick-on put Archie McClelland clean through to slot past Austin Byfield.

Leverstock’s best chance of the game came in the 82nd minute when a pass from Ryan Carruthers put Ibrahim Nagheeb through on goal, but keeper Xavi Comas produced a great save to turn Nagheeb’s shot round the post. Leighton’s top scorer Leon Lobjoit came off the bench towards the end of the game, and was denied firstly by the post, and then by a great save from Byfield, but in stoppage time he connected with a Connolly corner to head home a third Leighton goal.
