(H) Tring Athletic

Leverstock Green exited the Herts Charity Shield at the first round stage against a strong Tring Athletic side. It was a good pre-season workout for both sides. Leverstock were missing several key players, and fielded a number of new signings against a Tring side featuring most of their marquee summer signings. The key portion of the match was midway through the first half, where Tring scored three goals in twelve minutes against a Leverstock defence that hadn’t played together before and had yet to properly gel. Despite being the middle of July, it was a cold and wet afternoon throughout with some tricky conditions.

Tring had the game’s first near miss in the 10th minute when Guiseppe Delgaudio hit a shot from the edge of the box just wide. However, it was Leverstock who scored the game’s opening goal in the 13th minute. Radu-Mihai Stefanoaica made a strong run into the box, and squared to set up Chris Blunden, who had the goal at his mercy and slotted a first-time shot past Eric Negraru in the Tring goal.

Their lead barely lasted two minutes, as a backpass towards keeper Dan O’Brien came up short, and Max Hercules nipped in and slid the ball past O’Brien for the equaliser. Tring started to take control of the game, and in the 19th minute a through pass put Josh Chamberlain through on goal, and the former Berkhamsted forward made no mistake as he slotted the ball past O’Brien for a 2-1 Tring lead.

Chamberlain was through again in the 21st minute, but this time his shot was saved by O’Brien. However, a third Tring goal arrived in the 27th minute as Dave O’Connor rose to head home a cross from close range.

The game wasn’t over yet, though, and five minutes later Leverstock were back in it. Joe Sadler’s pass found Blunden in the box, and Blunden turned and pulled away from a defender before squeezing home a shot which beat Negraru at his near post and pulled the score back to 3-2. There was almost a fourth Tring goal in the 40th minute but Delgaudio’s header hit the bar, and the game went into the break with Tring holding a slender 3-2 lead.

Conditions continued to be difficult in the second half, and there were few chances for both sides. In the 78th minute Leverstock had what looked like a golden opportunity as they were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area. It was prime Blunden territory, and he pulled out another great effort which curled over the wall and was heading for the top corner until Negraru tipped it over the bar. There was another near miss in the 82nd minute when a shot from Rio Beach was parried away by Negraru and the rebound just eluded Blunden.

With Leverstock pushing everything forward in search of an equaliser, it was always likely that they would get caught out, and so it proved in the 84th minute when they were caught on the break from a corner and Harry Shepherd raced clear to steer a shot wide of O’Brien for a fourth Tring goal that sealed the tie.

For Tring it was revenge for the St Mary’s Cup Final defeat at the end of last season, while for Leverstock it was a promising performance, with new signing Nat Connolly being named Man of the Match, and 16 year old Joe Sadler, who has come up through the club’s EJA sides, also catching the eye.

(H) Amersham Town

Leverstock Green have the chance of ending their season with some silverware after they reached the final of the West Herts St Mary’s Cup with a 3-1 win over Amersham Town in Thursday night’s semi-final at the Lords Builders Merchants Stadium. It was a good open game with both sides having their share of chances, but Leverstock took their chances more ruthlessly, which proved to be the difference.

Amersham had the ball in the net from a goalmouth scramble in the 9th minute, but it was disallowed for a handball. Instead it was Leverstock who opened the scoring in the 19th minute. Alvin Kyeremeh chased the ball down to the byeline and crossed into the six-yard box where Chris Blunden was there to stab home his 19th goal of the season from close range.

It could have been 2-0 in the 29th minute when a pass from Ethan Mooney put Richard Ennin through on goal, but Ennin was denied as he tried to take the ball round keeper Ryan Lehane. The loose ball came out to George Mitchell-Gears, who hit a shot just wide. On 35 minutes Austin Byfield made the first of several great saves as he kept out an Amersham effort from close range.

On 41 minutes Leverstock went close again when a corner was flicked on to Luke Durnin, whose shot struck the outside of the post. A minute before the break Leverstock got the crucial second goal when Mooney pulled the ball back from the bye-line to the edge of the penalty area where Kyeremeh met it with a superb strike into the corner of the net.

It was 2-0 at half time, but Amersham almost pulled a goal back within 20 seconds of the restart as a shot went across goal and just wide. Leverstock then had a chance for a third in the 49th minute when a cheeky backheel from Kyeremeh put Ennin through on goal, but his shot went over the bar.

Amersham were certainly not giving up, and were denied a goal back twice in quick succession in the 70th minute. Firstly a stinging shot from Bradley Sweeney brought a superb save out of Byfield to tip the ball over the bar, and seconds later another long-range effort was kept out by Byfield as he got the faintest of touches to turn it onto the bar.

Leverstock were visibly tiring, and made a couple of substitutions before scoring the decisive third goal in the 78th minute. It was man-of-the-match Kyeremeh again who found the net, heading home Nagheeb’s corner from six yards out. Amersham continued to battle, and got a consolation goal in stoppage time as Harry Bennett netted from the penalty spot, but the final whistle followed shortly afterwards.

Leverstock will now meet Tring Athletic in the final at Vauxhall Road on Monday 8th May, kick-off 3.00 pm.

vs

(H) Leighton Town

Leverstock Green finished the season with a 3-0 home defeat to already-crowned champions Leighton Town, but held onto their 7th place in the league thanks to Biggleswade United also losing. It was a game that never caught fire and for the most part looked like an end-of-season affair, and all three goals were rather softly conceded.

Leverstock had the better of a quiet open half-hour, winning several corners, but apart from a near scramble caused by a corner in the 15th minute, little came of them. In the 26th minute Elginey Daalberg made a good run and put over a cross which George Mitchell-Gears tried to hook over his head, but the effort went wide. In the 30th minute Mitchell-Gears won the ball off Ben Spaul and was set to run through until being brought down by Spaul, who only received a yellow card when a red could have been a possibility.

Two minutes before the half looked like drifting towards a goalless conclusion, Leighton scored when Lewis Toomey got on the end of a Kyle Connolly free kick with a header that should have been stopped, but found its way into the net.

The second half was equally uninspiring, and Leighton added a second goal in the 65th minute. The Green defence was undone by a single ball down the middle as a flick-on put Archie McClelland clean through to slot past Austin Byfield.

Leverstock’s best chance of the game came in the 82nd minute when a pass from Ryan Carruthers put Ibrahim Nagheeb through on goal, but keeper Xavi Comas produced a great save to turn Nagheeb’s shot round the post. Leighton’s top scorer Leon Lobjoit came off the bench towards the end of the game, and was denied firstly by the post, and then by a great save from Byfield, but in stoppage time he connected with a Connolly corner to head home a third Leighton goal.
