(H) Arlesey Town

Leverstock Green FC got back to winning ways with a hard-fought win against Arlesey Town in Tuesday night’s SSML Premier Division game. As in the first game against Arlesey back in January, Leverstock had to come from behind to get their win.

It was a game of few clear-cut chances for either side. After an even opening to the game, it was Arlesey who took the lead in the 24th minute. Leverstock were caught on the break after giving the ball away, and as Rory Busby chased a ball forward, Josh Bowler came out to intercept, but slipped in the muddy goalmouth. That gave Busby the chance to get to the ball first, and with Bowler stranded, Busby was able to chip the ball over him and find the net.

It was a frustrating half for Leverstock Green FC, who were struggling to put together any passing moves, but they got back on level terms in the 36th minute. A cross from the right found Lewis Collins, who laid the ball back to find Ryan Carruthers just outside the box, and Carruthers took a touch before striking a fierce shot that flew past keeper Ollie Skinner for the equaliser.

Half time was reached with the scores level from the only two efforts on target in the half. Leverstock Green FC got their noses in front in the 54th minute with a scrambled goal from a corner. Nat Connolly’s cross found Josh Dooley, whose header was blocked, and Luke Beckwith forced the loose ball home. The second half was as short on chances as the first, with a shot from Rio Beach being tipped over the bar by Skinner in the 66th minute.

Guiseppe Delgaudio came off the bench in the 73rd minute to mark his return to the club he last played for in 2020, having played at Tring in the interim, and there was also a first team debut off the bench for promising Development Team player Schilo Mateta Kanda. Bowler had to deal with an awkward low shot from Bowler in the 88th minute, but the Leverstock defence held firm and there was no repeat of Saturday’s last-gasp disappointment as the Green side held out for the 2-1 win and three more points to boost their play-off bid.

vs

(H) Crawley Green

Leverstock Green were seconds away from collecting another three points, but a scrambled equaliser with the last kick of the game meant they had to settle for a point against Crawley Green. It was a point that the visitors probably deserved with a strong second half display after a first half in which Leverstock were only prevented from establishing a handsome lead by their former goalkeeper Adi Connolly in the Crawley goal. Leverstock were without leading scorer Radu-Mihai Stefanoaica, who was serving the first of a two-game suspension for reaching ten bookings for the season.

Leverstock put pressure on the visitors’ goal early, with Paul Marks going close in the fourth minute, heading into the side netting from Luke Beckwith’s cross. Two minutes later Leverstock had the lead. Nat Connolly laid a pass across the box to Ademide Baruwa, who struck home a fierce shot to score his first ever goal for the club.

The 1-0 lead should have been extended as Leverstock created a host of chances. In the 12th minute a pass from Rawn Seale put Beckwith through on goal, but his shot was way off target, going out for a throw-in. Four minutes later pressure from Seale forced keeper Connolly into an error as he played the ball straight out to Beckwith, but recovered to get a boot to Beckwith’s shot and deflect it wide.

In the 24th minute Beckwith was through again, but was blocked. Nat Connolly picked up the loose ball and continued through on goal, only to be denied by his namesake in goal. Three minutes later a long kick from Leverstock keeper Josh Bowler put Beckwith in behind the defence again, but again he was denied in a one-on-one situation by a save from Connolly. Three minutes before half time there was a warning that Leverstock may rue those missed chances as Joe Hankins was through for Crawley but was denied by a good save from Bowler.

Leverstock started the second half with just the single-goal lead, and the visitors made the most of attacking down the slope in the second half. In the opening minutes of the half they forced a series of corners which Leverstock did well to defend. However, in the 55th minute they paid the price for giving the ball away on the halfway line. A pass down the right put Jake Cowley in behind Mikey Havill-Tierney, and Cowley raced on towards the Leverstock goal before picking his spot and driving a shot into the corner of the net to level the scores.

Six minutes later Crawley might have gone in front as a cross found Dan Trif with lots of space on the left side of the penalty area, but Bowler produced a great save to turn his shot round the post. That proved important as Leverstock retook the lead in the 72nd minute. Rio Beach got to the bye-line and delivered a cross which Lewis Collins kept alive. The ball dropped for Baruwa, who aimed a dipping shot towards the top corner of the net which went in off the post for his second goal of the game.

Baruwa could have completed a hat-trick in the 82nd minute but again it was great goalkeeping by Connolly that kept his shot out. Crawley kept pushing for an equaliser as the game went into stoppage time, but Leverstock kept them out until the final seconds where they were unable to clear the ball adequately from a goalmouth scramble. Eventually the ball was forced home from a yard out by Cameron Kengne to level the scores, and with the final whistle going immediately after the restart, Leverstock were left deflated at the loss of two crucial points in their play-off push.

vs

(H) Dunstable Town

Leverstock Green FC notched up another win on Tuesday night as a single goal was enough to get them past Dunstable Town to reach the third round of the Gladwish Challenge Trophy. It was a very wet night which made conditions difficult for both sides, but the pitch held up well and it was an enjoyable end-to-end game, albeit with few clear chances at either end.

Leverstock’s best moment of the first half came in the third minute when a deep cross from Dan Weeks just eluded Rawn Seale coming in at the far post. Dunstable’s nearest miss came in the 18th minute when Harry Beaumont turned on the edge of the six-yard box but hit his shot across goal and wide. The rain got increasingly heavy during the half, but the effort of both sides could not be faulted.

The rain eased off a little as the second half got under way, but the players were still having difficulty keeping their feet at times. Dunstable had a good moment in the 57th minute when Kelvin Osei-Addo went on a run which took him past a couple of Leverstock Green FC defenders, but his eventual shot went just over the angle of post and bar.

The goal which decided the game came in the 64th minute. A cross from the left caused something of a goalmouth scramble in the Dunstable box, and it was Rawn Seale who got the decisive touch with a shot that found the net.

Dunstable were unlucky not to equalise five minutes later when Alfie Osborne hit a fine strike from distance, but it skimmed the crossbar. Dunstable keeper Alex Desmond had to leave the game with a head injury 15 minutes from time, but his replacement Connor Coulson was not seriously troubled, any more than Josh Bowler was at the other end.

Leverstock Green FC are now into the last 16 of the competition, where they have a home tie against Division One leaders Northampton ON Chenecks on a date to be advised.

vs

(H) Real Bedford

Leverstock Green FC pulled off a magnificent result on Saturday as they defeated runaway league leaders Real Bedford 2-1 at the Lords Builders Merchant Stadium. The visitors were 22 points ahead of Leverstock at the start of play and had won all but three of their league fixtures, but they came up against a disciplined, hard-working Leverstock side that fully deserved their three points that took them back up to third place in the SSML Premier Division.

Right from the start Leverstock were chasing every ball and pressuring their opponents, allowing them little chance to play their football. Leverstock took the lead in the 13th minute from a corner. Dan Pett’s cross went right into the heart of the six yard box, where Radu-Mihai Stefanoaica connected with a powerful header that brought a great save out of visiting keeper Tyler McGregor. However, Luke Beckwith got his head to the rebound and forced the ball over the line for a 1-0 Leverstock lead.

Three minutes later Bedford had a go with a long-range effort which was well saved by Josh Bowler. However, much of the play was at the other end, where Leverstock’s constant pressure forced an error out of McGregor, who kicked the ball straight to Stefanoaica in the 21st minute, but got away with it as Stefanoaica shot over the bar. Rawn Seale got on the end of another Pett corner in the 25th minute, but his header went wide. Three minutes later Seale pressured a defender into giving the ball away on the edge of his own penalty area. Seale laid the ball off to Beckwith, whose cross was met by Stefanoaica sliding in to put Leverstock Green FC into a 2-0 lead.

The last ten minutes of the half saw a strong recovery from the visitors, as they finally started to put a threat on the Leverstock goal. In the 40th minute Ben Stevens got past a couple of challenges in the box before shooting home to put his side back into the game at 2-1. Over the remainder of the half Bowler had to save a close-range header, and Joey Evans fired a shot inches over the bar as Leverstock were desperately in need of the half time whistle.

The way that Bedford ended the half suggested that it would be a long second half for Leverstock Green FC, but after the break the Green side had recovered their composure and picked where they had left off before Bedford’s revival. Leverstock were once again chasing down their opponents and denying them any space. The visitors were unable to create any meaningful chances until the final minutes as the Leverstock defence held their nerve.

Leverstock could have added a third goal in the 78th minute, but McGregor pulled off a great save to keep out a fierce shot from Ethan Mooney, and denied Ademide Baruwa from the rebound. In the 83rd minute it was the turn of Bowler to pull off two equally impressive saves, firstly turning a header from a free kick round the post, and then tipping a header over the bar from the resulting corner. Seven additional minutes were played at the end, and in the fourth of those minutes an unlucky deflection offered a great chance to a Bedford forward, but Rio Beach came in with a superb game-winning block.

The final whistle eventually came and Leverstock Green FC celebrated a notable win that keeps them very much in the promotion play-off picture.

vs

(H) Bovingdon

Leverstock Green FC began their defence of the St Mary’s Cup on Tuesday night, and progressed to the semi-finals with a 3-0 win over Bovingdon. Four of the players from Saturday’s match were rested due to injury, and three others started on the bench, but the side that was picked did a professional job with a comfortable win over a Bovingdon side containing a number of ex-Leverstock players and management.

One of the ex-Leverstock players was goalkeeper Matt Fallon, and he was brought into action in the 8th minute to parry away a shot from Ademide Baruwa, with Lewis Collins just failing to get on the rebound. Fallon did well again in the 23rd minute when Collins was through on goal, coming off his line to block the shot with his legs, and again in the 28th minute, tipping a shot from Joe Sadler over the bar.

A minute later, however, a great pass from Sadler put Jayden Newman clear of the defence, and Newman ran on to slot the ball past Fallon to give Leverstock an overdue 1-0 lead.

Despite having been in control of the game, Leverstock Green FC still only had their single-goal lead at the break, and Newman was replaced at half time by Rawn Seale, having picked up an injury late in the half. Seven minutes into the second half Leverstock got the cushion of a two-goal lead. Mikey Havill-Tierney floated in a cross from the left touchline, and Seale got a glancing touch with a header into the corner of the net.

Josh Bowler was forced into his only serious save of the night in the 71st minute, turning away a header from another former Green player, Jack Allen. At the other end Fallon turned away a shot from Havill-Tierney in the 78th minute, but the third Leverstock goal finally arrived in the 89th minute as Luke Beckwith’s pass put Ethan Mooney through to put away a composed finish.

Leverstock Green FC will be away to Tring Athletic or Berkhamsted Raiders in the semi-finals, on a date to be determined. They now turn their attention back to the league with a tough home game against runaway league leaders Real Bedford coming up on Saturday.
