Leverstock Green have yet another match to look forward to as they won 1-0 at Tring Athletic on Saturday to reach the final of the St Mary’s Cup for the second straight year. Leverstock will face their playoff opponents Harpenden Town in the final, on a date to be arranged.

It was revenge for Tring’s 1-0 win at Leverstock in the final league match four days earlier, although this was a far more entertaining match, with more goalmouth action inside the opening two minutes than in the whole of Tuesday’s match. Josh Bowler had to produce a good save to keep out a Tring header with just over a minute played, and seconds later Rawn Seale was through on goal at the other end but shot over the bar.

In the 28th minute Gary Connolly made a run into the Tring half before finding Dan Pett in the box with a pass, but Pett’s first time shot was saved by keeper Dan Gould. On 35 minutes Connolly’s cross from the right found Seale coming in at the near post. Seale got a touch on the ball, but not quite enough as it went across goal, hit the post and bounced away from goal.

Bowler had to make another couple of good saves early in the second half, firstly to turn a shot round the post, then to save a header from the resulting corner, as Tring enjoyed a spell of pressure.

The decisive goal came in the 71st minute. Seale delivered a cross from near the right corner flag which found Pett, whose shot was parried by Gould, but the rebound came back to Pett and he nodded it home to open the scoring.

Leverstock were holding onto their lead comfortably until the 7th minute of stoppage time, when Tring had a golden opportunity to equalise. A cross from the left went through everyone and found Harry Shepherd, who was alone in acres of space with the goal at his mercy, but to the relief of the Leverstock contingent, Shepherd dragged his shot wide of the target.

Leverstock now face a decisive couple of weeks. On Wednesday night they travel to Harpenden Town in the promotion playoff semi-final, with a possible final on Bank Holiday Monday. On Saturday 11th May they face London Lions in the final of the Gladwish Challenge Trophy, also at Harpenden, and now they also have the St Mary’s Cup Final against Harpenden to be fitted in.

On a very wet Tuesday night in Tring, Leverstock Green FC came away with a well-earned point. Although Leverstock had the game’s better chances and will feel they should have won the game, a point was a decent result against a Tring side that have been in good form recently and in conditions that were becoming near-farcical by the end.

After a dry few days, the rain started a couple of hours before kick-off, but the referee was happy to start the game after some areas were forked. Leverstock Green FC made a bright start to the game and could have taken an early lead. In the 7th minute a shot from Luke Beckwith was turned round the post by Tring keeper Josh Allen. From the resulting corner Radu-Mihai Stefanoaica got his head to the ball, but Allen produced another great save to tip it over the bar. The Leverstock pressure continued as Callum Neal hit a shot from the edge of the box that went just over the angle of post and bar. Neal was close again in the 17th minute with a shot from another corner that went just wide.

With Leverstock not having turned their early promise into goals, they were vulnerable to a goal against the run of play, and so it proved in the 21st minute. Godlove Oppong got on the end of a corner with an effort that seemed to bounce up and over the reach of Liam Gauthier, although there were protests that Gauthier was being impeded as he tried to reach for the ball.

Leverstock Green FC continued to put pressure on the Tring goal, but they were denied again by Allen in the 35th minute as he turned a shot from Guiseppe Delgaudio round the post. However, two minutes later Ryan Carruthers delivered a superb cross from distance into the box, and Delgaudio got on the end of it with a thunderous header to level the scores at 1-1 against his former club.

Gauthier produced a good save late in the half to turn a shot from Harry Shepherd round the post and send the teams into the break on level terms.

The rain did not relent, and indeed became ever heavier during the second half. With conditions becoming increasingly difficult underfoot, chances were few and far between at both ends, but Leverstock were still able to put together some impressive passages of play. In the 63rd minute Delgaudio went close again with a header from Neal’s cross that went just wide. At the other end Tring threatened occasionally, but their threat was well-handled by the Leverstock defence and the sure hands of Gauthier when he was called into action.

By the end of the game there were sticky patches all over the pitch and spray coming up every time the ball hit the ground. However, Leverstock Green FC almost won it in the 89th minute with a moment of quality from Carruthers, who hit a low shot from distance which was goalbound, but Allen just got a hand to it to turn it round the post. It would have been tough on either side to lose the game at the death, and the draw was a fair result in the end.

There was late heartbreak for the Under-18s, as they came very close to ending the 100% record of Tring Athletic in Thursday night’s SCFYL Corinthian Division game, but were beaten by a goal deep into stoppage time.

Tring had won their opening four league games, as well as having a long run in the FA Youth Cup, and they took an early lead. However, Stan Kenyon equalised for Leverstock in the 14th minute. The score remained a 1-1 until the 4th minute of stoppage time when Tring scored a winner.

Leverstock Green came away with a point from their visit to Tring Athletic on Holiday Tuesday, and it was a very hard-fought point in terrible conditions. Goalkeeper Austin Byfield was the hero for Leverstock, pulling off a string of brilliant saves to keep the game level and ensure that his side continued their unbeaten league run. For both sides it was their first game for three weeks after the postponements caused by the recent cold snap.

There was a debut for new signing Danny May, an experienced defender who started at Northampton Town before going on to play for a number of non-league clubs, including Hemel Hempstead Town, Royston Town and Colney Heath. There was also a return from injury for Luke Durnin, making his first appearance since September, although his return was cut short after a head injury in the first half. Luke Beckwith also made his first appearance since September, having been playing for AFC Dunstable in the meantime.

It was May who had Leverstock’s first effort on goal of the game, hitting a shot from distance just over the bar in the third minute. There was a scare for Leverstock in the 16th minute when Bogdan Marian put the ball across the face of their goal, but no-one was on the end of it. There was another escape two minutes later when the ball was again in the Leverstock six-yard box but George Carbery couldn’t get his boot on the ball.

Leverstock’s best effort of the game came in the 35th minute when Chris Blunden’s shot from the edge of the box struck the bar. Byfield pulled off the first of his great saves in the 44th minute, turning a close-range shot from Godlove Oppong over the bar. In stoppage time Leverstock went close again when former Green keeper Oscar Frost flapped at a corner, but Eli Hearn headed the loose ball off the line. Further into stoppage time Byfield pulled off another great save as he dived full-length to turn a free kick from Marian round the post.

The conditions deteriorated in the second half with heavy rain being blown sideways across the pitch by strong winds. Leverstock were playing up the slope and had difficulty keeping the ball out of their own half for any length of time. There was a succession of chances for Tring, but Byfield denied Leo Farruch three times, twice at his near post and once with his feet. There were also a number of goalmouth scrambles, but the Leverstock defence never stopped battling and kept the ball out.

Having not created any chances during the second half, Leverstock had a chance to win the game in stoppage time as Blunden got past a defender in the box and had a shooting opportunity open up for a second, but his eventual shot was off target. In the end Leverstock were very happy to come away with a point from a game where they were under the cosh for long periods in the second half by a very good Tring side. Leverstock and Tring remained fifth and sixth respectively in the SSML Premier Division table after today’s results.

Leverstock Green exited the Premier Division Cup at the first round stage as they were beaten 2-1 at Tring Athletic in Tuesday night’s tie, which was finally played at the third time of asking.

Tring made the stronger start to the match, with Leverstock keeper Tautis Poniskaitis having to save a shot from Olly Butler in the opening minute. In the 10th minute they opened the scoring through Ronan Hutchins, who picked up the ball from a poor defensive header and drilled home an emphatic shot from outside the box that gave Poniskaitis no chance.

Leverstock then had a series of good chances. In the 13th minute Rawn Seale got on the end of a Dan Pett corner but couldn’t get his shot on target. Two minutes later a pass from Pett put Seale in behind a defence that was running away from goal, but again Seale’s shot was off target. Jack Allen hit a shot just wide in the 17th minute, and in the 26th minute both Seale and Allen had efforts in a goalmouth scramble following a corner, but neither could force the ball home.

The equaliser finally arrived in the 33rd minute, and it was a bolt from the blue as Ryan Carruthers received the ball 30 yards out and struck a ferocious dipping shot that flew over the outstretched arm of keeper Jake Alley into the net.

The scores were level at 1-1 after an evenly-contested first half, but it only took six minutes of the second half for Tring to go back in front. A long ball forward found Allen in two minds whether to clear it or play it back, and that moment of hesitation was pounced on by Butler, who ran on to slot the ball past Poniskaitis for a 2-1 lead.

That proved to be enough for Tring as Leverstock pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but were unable to break down a well-organised Tring defence, with Alley not being required to make a serious save during the half.

Leverstock Green produced a fantastic comeback to turn a two goal deficit into a 3-2 win in Tuesday’s Dacorum Derby at Tring Athletic. With 20 minutes to go Fergus Moore’s side were still 2-0 down to the ten men of Tring, but three well-taken goals turned the game on its head.

The omens weren’t good for Leverstock, who hadn’t won at the Grass Roots Stadium for a number of years, and were facing four players in the Tring side who had been at Leverstock for the previous two seasons. In the early stages it looked like luck was against them, as Dan Pett struck a superb free kick in the 12th minute which came back off the crossbar. Three minutes later Tring had a free kick at the other end but Alfie Bonfield saved from Frankie Hercules.

On 20 minutes Leverstock had another chance when a pass from Tomasz Siemienczuk gave Rawn Seale a run at goal, but Tring keeper Jake Alley saved his shot. At the other end on 27 minutes it was Tring’s turn to hit the woodwork as a long-range shot from one of the former Green players Adiel Mannion struck the bar.

The game had been even up to the point when Tring were awarded a penalty in the 38th minute. The view of most in the ground was that James Hall’s tackle hadn’t been a foul, but the referee was adamant in his decision, and former Green skipper John Smith drove home the spot kick to put Tring into the lead. Things got worse for Leverstock four minutes later when a catastrophic mix-up on the halfway line allowed Mannion to run clean through on goal, and he made no mistake with his finish to put Tring into a 2-0 lead.

Another turning point in the game occurred in the 58th minute, when Tring were reduced to ten men. While Pett was receiving treatment after a foul challenge, an off-the-ball incident took place between Kian Wilkes and another of the former Leverstock players Jack Stevens. The incident was spotted by the assistant referee, and the decision was a yellow card for Wilkes and a straight red for Stevens.

Leverstock had been the better side in the second half, but were still not getting the run of the ball in the penalty area, as Tring appeared to be holding onto their lead. There was an unhappy end to the game for James Hall, who was playing his first game of the season while on a break from university in the USA, as he had to be helped from the field with an injury in the 69th minute.

However, in the 71st minute they finally got their deserved goal. Seale played a beautiful curling pass into the path of Siemienczuk, who burst between two defenders to go clean through and slot the ball neatly past Alley to put the Green side back in the game at 2-1.

Two minutes later many in the ground thought that the scores had been levelled as Rio Beach hit a shot that rippled the netting, but it had gone into the side netting. The equaliser was not long in coming though. In the 77th minute Lewis Collins made a great run down the right and put over a cross which flicked up off a defender, and as the ball came down Ollie Lawford got his head to the ball to level the scores at 2-2.

Leverstock were well on top now, and almost took the lead within a minute as Siemienczuk was clean through but his shot was saved by Alley. In the 82nd minute Siemienczuk ran onto a pass from Beach and nodded the ball past Alley, but with the net gaping he lost his balance and couldn’t get his shot on target. The goal was coming, though, and it arrived in the 87th minute. Again it was good work from Collins on the right, and his cross flicked off the head of a defender and dropped for Seale, who connected with a superb first-time volley to put his side into a 3-2 lead.

There could have been another goal in the first minute of stoppage time, but Siemienczuk was denied by a brilliant save by Alley. Leverstock had to hold out through seven minutes of stoppage time, but they did so successfully to register a very impressive win, which was their sixth win from their last seven away league matches. It has been Leverstock’s away form which is mainly responsible for them sitting at the lofty heights of fifth in the table at the end of 2021.
